The unstoppable Matt Hill

Fitspeek 111 is a podcast of three firsts! It’s the first time we have ever had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle on the podcast. It’s the first time a guest has ever said, “My agent.” And it’s also the first time we have had a guest on the show who has run around the perimeter of the USA (and then some).

Vancouver’s Matt Hill is as much of a lead actor as a supporting cast member. He is as much of a voice as a face. He has legs of iron and a heart of platinum. In addition to being known globally as Raphael on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many other television and radio roles, he is an accomplished ultra distance athlete and co-founder of the Run For One Planet initiative.

On Fitspeek 111, we spend 45 minutes with Matt, a man who moves at the speed of life, encouraging and inspiring others wherever he goes.

Also on the show, Mikey Ross, the head coach from the Abbotsford Triathlon Club is back for a top five list. Mikey goes deep as he offers us the first of his two part series on fostering and maintaining personal relationships. Here it all now by pressing play right here.

That’s high test refreshment for a guy who pushes the boundaries of endurance.

Also in the interview we find out how Craig got into multisport racing and what he has been doing to stay fit and safe during this whole Covid-19 thing. Hear it now by pressing play below.

Fitspeek 105: Kevin Mackinnon

Like many folks who get into triathlon, Hamilton’s Kevin Mackinnon was introduced to triathlon after a running injury. That was in 1985 and he has never looked back.

Since then, Kevin has been at the right place at the right time, so much in fact that he’s been able to earn his living immersed in a sport he loves. After a successful career as an athlete, he went to journalism school and has traveled the world working as a writer, photographer, and as a race announcer.

In our conversation with the guy who is also the editor at Triathlon Magazine Canada, we talk about his experiences as both a racer and a writer. We also delve into how the Covid-19 crisis has impacted the magazine.

Later in the show Abbotsford Triathlon Coach Mikey Ross offers up some well-earned wisdom and perspective on an extra special edition of The Top Five List. Hear it all now by pressing that play button below.

Tyres can be mounted two ways. Mikey knows how to do both.

Triathletes in Basements, Riding Rollers!

Fitspeek had to change the name of our Covid-19 interview series because of this guy. He’s a guy who has been to the Olympics twice, has won numerous 70.3 and Ironman distances races, and yes rode on his rollers (in the aerobars) for more than three hours.

Not only is he one of Canada’s most successful triathletes across all distances, he is also an inspirational guy and a heck of a story teller.

In Fitspeek 104, we feature our interview with Brent McMahon. Brent tells us about his long-term coaching relationship with Triathlon Hall of Famer, coach Lance Watson of Lifesport. Wow – 20 years!

Also in the podcast, we find out about how a guy who earns his living in triathlon can still keep things going, now that there are no more races (for a while anyway). And if you are looking for some motivation while you Rouvey or Zwift away, Brent’s ideas on how to keep things fresh and interesting in these most unusual times will quench your brain’s thirst.

And yes the guy in the middle, does still work for the fine folks at the Bike Barn in Penticton. Fitspeek 99: Steve Brown

One of the groups of people in the fitness community hit hardest by the Covid-19 crisis is the race directors.

In Fitspeek 99 we speak with a guy who has been a race director on Western Canada’s triathlon scene for decades.

Penticton’s Steve Brown has darn near done it all, the owner of a running store, Ironman athlete, Race Director and saviour (?) of Ironman Canada, founder of the Ultra 520K Triathlon. Steve has seen many things in his years being involved in multisport.

In our interview, Steve tells us about how he got into triathlon, his role on the board of directors of Ironman Canada, the amazing community support of his home town, and how he is dealing with the Covid-19 situation. Here it now, along with the Mikey Ross Top Five list by pressing play below.

Tapering 201 = Fitspeek 94: A Conversation with Lifesport’s Lance Watson

In his over 25 years as a triathlon coach, Victoria’s Lance Watson has been helping athletes become faster and more consistent. He’s also part of the story for one of the greatest moments in triathlon ever

Paul Henderson scored “The Goal”. Simon Whitfield scored “The Gold.”

One of the keys to Simon Whitfield’s success in the inaugural Olympic Triathlon in Sydney, back in 2020, was a well-designed & executed taper!

In Fitspeek 94, we get the scoop on what Lance did to help maximize Simon’s chances for success on that magical day.

In addition to coaching Olympic bound, short-course athletes, Watson has also coached one of Canada’s most successful long-course triathletes, Lisa Bentley. In the interview we’ll find out the difference between a front-end taper and a back-end taper.

Sometimes race results are baffling, this guy defied the odds, and logic as he bounced back from a case of shingles to not only an Ironman win, but the record for the fastest Ironman time for a rookie. Brent McMahon’s performance at Ironman Arizona in 2014 is proof that sometimes magic can happen on the race course! Hear it all now on Fitspeek 94 The Art of the Taper by pressing that button right below.
